Career Pathway: eSports Management (AAS)

Starting this fall, Westfield High School, in partnership with Lone Star College Houston North, is launching a new CTE pathway in eSports Management. This program is designed to prepare students for careers in the rapidly growing eSports industry.

What is eSports?
eSports, or electronic sports, are video games played competitively in a highly organized environment. These games can range from team-oriented multiplayer games and first-person shooters to virtual reconstructions of physical sports. The eSports industry, which began in South Korea in the early 2000s, has grown into a global phenomenon with substantial market opportunities.

Program Highlights:

• Dual Credit Courses: Students will earn dual credit by taking courses that align with Lone Star College’s curriculum, allowing them to work towards an Associate of Applied Science degree.
• Comprehensive Curriculum: The pathway covers a range of topics, including event planning, game design and development, and business management.
• Industry Growth: With the eSports industry expected to generate $3 billion this year, students will be positioned to take advantage of numerous career opportunities.

Support and Opportunities:

• Texas Workforce Commission Grant: The program is funded by a $178,398 grant from the Texas Workforce Commission, one of only 42 awarded across the state.
• Inclusive Participation: The pathway is open to all students, including those with physical disabilities, providing an inclusive environment where everyone can compete and succeed.
• eSports Lab: Thanks to a $30,395 donation from International Game Technology, the program includes a state-of-the-art eSports lab where students can practice, compete, and host tournaments.

Program Structure:

• High School Courses: Students will take courses in business, marketing, and finance.
• College Courses: Concurrently, students will enroll in Lone Star College courses such as Intro to Game Design and Development.
• Core Curriculum: The program supplements core graduation requirements, ensuring students receive a well-rounded education.

Application and Enrollment:

• First Cohort: The program will accept its first cohort of 25 freshman students through an application process.
• Transfer Opportunities: Students from other high schools within the district can apply to transfer to Westfield to join the pathway.
