Application Process: Phase I- Students will be evaluated on 4th and 5th grade point averages, 4th and 5th grade conduct, 4th and 5th grade attendance, 4th grade STAAR scores, and 5th grade MAP testing. Phase II- If students meet minimum requirements from Phase I, students will move on to Phase II of the application. In Phase II, students are required to have a teacher recommendation. This recommendation is requested by Roberson only. Parents do not make this request. Students will also need to attend an audition/interview at Roberson. Phase III- If students meet minimum requirements for the teacher recommendation and audition/interview combined, then the student will be entered into the lottery. The lottery will determine if the student is offered a seat at Roberson and for what community. If a student is not selected in the lottery, the student will be placed on the waiting list. Frequently Asked Questions Can I apply to more than one middle school of choice? Yes. The online application allows you to apply to more than one middle school at the same time. I have a child in the 6th grade at another Spring ISD Middle School. Can they apply? We do not currently accept rising 7th or 8th graders who are already in the district. If this changes, the community will be informed. What if I have more than one child apply and only one advances through the process or is accepted into Roberson? Each students’ advancement is determined using a matrix/rubric that reviews grades, attendance, STAAR scores, conduct, an audition/interview, and lottery selection. If one child does not advance from one phase to the next, then they are ultimately not selected. There are no exceptions. My child wants to play an instrument, but would also like to be in the STEM community. Can he/she play the instrument as an elective within the STEM community? No. Instruments are only classes taken as part of the Performing Arts community. We recommend looking carefully at each community course profile as well when making your community selection. Certain classes are specific to the community and cannot be swapped out with classes that belong to another community. My child was not selected for the community that he/she ranked as 1st choice, can he/she change communities? No. Each student is given the opportunity to rank communities because we cannot guarantee that they will receive their 1st choice. After the school year begins, students are required to stay in that community for all 3 years.
